The 4x4 Myth: Do You Really Need One to Get to Rio Celeste?
Short Answer: No, you do not need a 4x4.
The main roads leading from Liberia, La Fortuna, and San José to the Rio Celeste area (Bijagua and Katira) are fully paved and in excellent condition. Any standard economy car can reach the Tenorio Volcano National Park entrance and our tubing center without issues.
However, as local experts, we have a small recommendation: while a 4x4 isn't mandatory, a high-clearance SUV is always better for Costa Rican rural roads. It provides more comfort during the last few kilometers of your journey and gives you peace of mind if you decide to explore smaller side roads or visit during the peak of the rainy season (September - October).
Nano’s Advice: "Don't let rental car companies upsell you an expensive 4x4 just for this trip. Save that money for a Rio Celeste Tubing tour! Just drive carefully and enjoy the scenery."

Top Routes: How to Reach the Blue River
Depending on where your Costa Rican adventure begins, your journey to Rio Celeste will vary in time and scenery. Here is everything you need to know about the three most common routes.
3.1 La Fortuna to Rio Celeste (Shuttle & Drive)
This is the most popular route for travelers. The drive is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours through beautiful rolling hills and pineapple plantations via Route 4.
🚌 Coming from La Fortuna?
Don't let logistics ruin your day trip. We have a dedicated roadmap covering SINAC ticket secrets, parking tips, and a full "Driving vs. Tour" comparison specifically for this route.

The road is 100% paved. Follow Route 4 towards Upala. It is a safe drive, but remember: National Park tickets must be pre-booked online—they are not sold at the entrance!
🚐 Private Transfer
At $185 USD (1-4 pax), a private shuttle is the most efficient choice. You'll avoid the stress of navigation and parking "wars" at the trailhead.
3.2 From Liberia Airport (LIR) to Rio Celeste
If you are landing in Guanacaste, you are only 1.5 hours away (approx. 85 km). This makes Rio Celeste the closest major rainforest destination to the Pacific coast.
📍 The Route from Liberia
Take Route 1 (Inter-American Highway) south to Cañas. Turn left towards Bijagua/Upala. The road is fully paved and very easy for rental cars.
Pro-Tip: After a long flight, a Private Transfer ($185 USD) allows you to start your vacation immediately. Your driver will be waiting with a sign, ready to take you straight to your hotel or our tubing center.
3.3 Driving from San José (SJO Airport)
Coming from the capital is a longer journey, typically taking 4 to 4.5 hours. It is a beautiful drive that takes you from the Central Valley into the northern plains.
🛣️ Recommended Route
The most reliable route is via Route 1 to San Ramón, then following the signs through Bajo Rodriguez towards La Fortuna, and connecting to Route 4.
💰 Tolls & Fuel
Expect to pay around $10 - $15 USD in tolls (round trip). Most accept credit cards, but carry small Colones bills just in case. Fill your tank in San Ramón.
Gerald’s Advice: "If you are driving from SJO, try to leave before 10:00 AM. This avoids the heavy afternoon rains in the mountains and ensures you arrive in Bijagua before dark."
Shared Shuttles vs. Private Transfers: Which is Right for You?
Choosing the right type of shuttle can save you hours of travel time. In Costa Rica, there is a big difference between a shared service and a private one, especially when heading to a remote area like Rio Celeste.
🚐 Shared Shuttles (Group)
Best for solo travelers or couples on a budget.
- Cost: ~$30 - $35 per person.
- Schedules: Fixed times (usually once or twice a day).
- Pick-up: Specific hotels only (you may need a taxi to the meeting point).
- Travel Time: Longer, as the van stops at multiple hotels to pick up other passengers.
⭐ Private Transfers
Best for families, groups, or stress-free travel.
- Cost: ~$185 (up to 4 people). If you are 3 or more, the price is nearly the same as shared!
- Schedules: You choose the time.
- Pick-up: Door-to-door (any hotel or airport).
- Flexibility: You can ask the driver to stop for photos, a bathroom break, or a quick snack at a local Soda.
Nano’s Local Tip: "The biggest advantage of a private transfer isn't just the comfort—it's the time. A private van from La Fortuna gets you here in 1.5 hours. A shared shuttle can take 3 hours after all the pick-ups and drop-offs. If you only have one day for Rio Celeste, go private."
