When you stand at the base of La Ceiba de la Paz, time seems to stand still. With over 400 years of living history and a colossal trunk that requires more than 20 people holding hands to encircle, this majestic tree in the Katira and Bijagua region is not merely a botanical wonder—it is an officially designated National Monument of Peace. Here is everything you need to know to experience this natural marvel.
The Legend of the Tree of Peace
To truly appreciate La Ceiba de la Paz, one must look deep into Northern Costa Rica’s ancestral heritage. Centuries before international travelers came seeking turquoise rivers, these rainforests were inhabited by indigenous communities, primarily the Maleku people. According to local oral history, regional rival tribes fought fiercely for territory. To halt the conflict, tribal chieftains agreed to meet for peace negotiations directly beneath the vast, protective canopy of this immense Ceiba. Here, they buried their weapons, signed an unwritten peace pact, and united their peoples. On June 4, 1989, the Costa Rican government formally declared the tree a living National Monument.
Colossal Dimensions: A Rainforest Titan
- Towering Height: Reaching approximately 44 meters (144 feet) into the sky, it dwarfs the surrounding agricultural and secondary forest canopy.
- Massive Trunk & Root System: The buttress root system spans a staggering circumference of roughly 37 meters (121 feet), creating towering vertical wooden walls.
- Canopy Ecosystem: Its branches support dozens of species of bromeliads, orchids, ferns, nesting toucans, and sleeping sloths.
Location & How to Get There
La Ceiba de la Paz is located in the community of Katira (Guatuso), approximately 15 minutes drive from Bijagua along paved Route 6 and scenic countryside lanes. Because it is located on an accessible private estate outside Tenorio Volcano National Park, visitors can park easily and walk along groomed grassy trails right up to the tree's roots.
